4 Years and counting

Postby MrWonderful » 09 Jan 2013, 16:55

Hi All,
I have been following this board for a while and have about a 4 year history with fissures, one healed after about a year and the other one has been entertaining me for about 3 years now. I tried a lot of different things and went to about 10 "specialists" in this time, having settled now with one doctor who is very good and at least does not give wrong treatments like other ones, but he has not managed to make me heal.
In my experience the doctors in this field can be very bad and give wrong or unnecessary treatment easily. In my case the worst wrong treatment was cortisone over a long period of time, which made my skin so thin that it was almost gone, not a good idea :)
Some things I have tried:
  • Ointments:
Diltiazem, Nitro, Zink, Bepanthen, Calendula, Hametum, Cortison (only do this short term!), Coconut Oil
  • Procedures:
Dilation (with a small "dildo", this is what most doctors recommend here in Europe), Botox (twice, 20 days ago the last time)
  • Diet:
Flax seed, Linseed, Psylium, Coconut Oil, high fiber in general, no suger for a while, no meat, and many other experiments
So I have tried about everything that doctors recommend except of surgery, however they all say it does not look so bad and they do not recommend surgery, so thats why I am still hoping to find a solution. As you all know, this condition has a huge impact on the quality of life, I something think that even the doctors cannot imagine that. If I ever go for surgery, it would be fissursectomy since LSR is not so common here and it brings a slightly higher chance of long term problems.
I do have phases with pretty strong pain over hours per day, but often its limited just during and shortly after BM. However, after a few years you start to realize how much you miss in live, how often you might have said no to a trip or event which you would have done if in better shape, and that slowly becomes very depressing. So the two things I am trying to focus on is not go go nuts and get too worked out about it and to constantly try to fix it, but the second part seems pretty hopeless after such a long time.
I am curious in how other people are actually evaluating the success/impact of a certain experiment (e.g. a new ointment or a new diet). Please check out my other thread for this.

p.s. Please make people stop using the saying "Pain in the ass" :)

Well to tell you the truth Mr. wonderful, after years of telling my children (now adults) that they were a pain in the butt, it became a reality, at least for me.
(that was a littler joke)
Right now I have been with this problem for a year, but I feel that given the size of my sentinel pile I have this problems for years, blaming it on the dreaded hemorroids.
I already done the nitro, as a fan of organic living and homeopathy I also have tried other approaches to this problem.
Right now after very pleasant holidays the over eating have ripped my old friend again and today has been one of those days that I would run to my Gastro and beg for surgery.
But as usual after the discomfort goes away I get to think two times if I should take the big step.
So my next appointment is in February and depending how my old friend is doing with my posterior that day it will be the deciding factor as what to come next.
Welcome to the forum.

Hi mr wonderful and welcome,
I have suffered for almost 2years now. I have had good times and bad times but I never seem to find anything that I can attribute healing to.
Diltiazem was the best thing so far, but I became allergic to it and as soon as I stopped it came back with a vengeance!
I have stopped eating red meat, bread, cake, pastrys, crisps .... Basically anything I get enjoyment from!.. And can't say I notice any difference in bm or af.
I suppose, in answer to your question, I give things a couple of weeks and see how it goes.

I have been battling this condition for 4 years as well - first year was absolute hell, severe pain and spasm down there, it controlled my life. Very slowly it has gotten better, to the point where it is a manageable for me. I have tried every treatment out there, except surgery, or botox.
I think what helped me more than anything was taking coconut oil internally - 2 tbsps every day, it is naturally healling to the insides and promotes good bowel movement and soft stools. I honestly believe though that my condition will never fully heal, although it can be managed to a point where you can live your life without worry about it too much.
All the best.

Thanks everybody for these responses!
@3years now: I had the same thought many times, that I will have to deal with this all my live, that it will never fully go away. I do not accept this though and I think its important to keep up the faith that it will go away fully, at least to the extend where it does not pain and you dont feel "incomplete" with a skin crack in your body. Though I will always watch what I eat and make sure to get a balanced diet.
I do have coconut oil, two table spoons sounds like a pretty big dosis, can I ask you how you actually eat it? I find it hard to even get down one tea spoon if I just eat it pure out of the jar, its pure fat after all.

I take the coconut oil and trust me I know that it feels like lard just out of the jar, but when I put it in the microwave and let it get warm it melts and to me taste very good.
I hope that helps.

I take 1 tbsp in the morning and 1 tbsp in the evening. Sometimes I skip a day or two depending on how I feel down there. I take a glass put it in warm water, let it dissolve, add a splash of juice and just drink it down, no problem.
