Scared of my visit to a colorectal surgeon

Postby Aussie_Fissure » 06 May 2014, 05:03

Hi all,
Im new here
Im a 48 year old female who has suffered from anal fissures on and off for a few years. They started getting worse in the past year and two months ago I ripped my anus pretty badly with a hard stool. There was blood everywhere, even in between bowel movements when I wipe there was blood. I started using Rectogesic at that time. At first I couldnt even get my finger inside to apply it it was that bad and paunful. I also started washing the anal area with warm water from a bidet after each bowel movement to reduce friction from toilet paper. I also applied a warm wheat bag (used for back pain) around that area to relax it. It started to heal, but I still get some minor blood after a bowel movement and it still hurts a bit. Im never relaxed during a bowel movement. Ive also developed a lump in that area which is quite visible (took pics of it with a professional camera) and is like a pink bulbous thing that sticks out. Th ebig tear was at the area closest to the vaginal wall and not the opposite side. COuld it be because I tend to lean forward during a bowel movement?
Im seeing a CRS next month as I feel its high time in was checked by a specialist rather the GP> I am worried about this lump. I wasnt there 2 years ago. After my fissure it developed in that area. Is it associated with the fissure? I worry about anal cancer but I dont have any risk factors for it and if it was cancer wouldnt it be getting worse instead of better by now? I know I am being irrational and anxious but thats how I am when I am worried about something. Can someone please tell me if its normal to get this pink lump on the anus ? thanks :)

Hi Aussie,
It's very natural to be anxious, so don't beat yourself up about that.
The pink lump is probably a sentinel tag. Do a google image search and see if that's what yours looks like.
It's a very normal, common thing to happen with anal fissures. Some of us have more than one! They do tend to shrink in time once the fissure is healed.
Some people have them removed if they have surgery for the fissure itself, but the removal of a tag seems to be more painful and cause more post-op problems than the fissure surgery.

It's more usual to have the fissure at the back, as you note, but a front one is not that unusual.

It sounds as though you are doing the right things to take care of your anus. How is your diet? Are you drinking enough water? Are your stools soft?

Good luck with the CRS. Let us know how your appointment goes.
Nifedipine/lidocaine, no help
Diltiazem, effective, but caused major rash
Nitroglycerine, effective.
Topical estrogen for final healing.
Gentle heat to bottom - pain relief, muscle relaxant
Kondremul mineral oil
Time - lots of time.
Status - Healed!
