How do I drink more water if I'm rarely thirsty?!?

Postby Mamalucia » 02 Feb 2013, 19:31

How can I increase my water intake? I have an issue with water I love it and used to drink it all the time. However lately I'm just not as thirsty and really only drink when I eat. Ive tried forcing myself but i end up just pouring a big glass of water and only taking a few sips then it sits there all day! I had my fissurectomy on Thursday and I feel amazing already...but I have only had 1 small BM since and I know it's because I'm not taking in enough water. I just can't bring myself to drink it if I'm not thirsty. Any suggestions? Or do I just have to force myself to drink?

Make yourself drink! I don't quite understand your aversion to water now. Have you googled it?
Maybe a flavored water will help, non-carbonated.

I've tried adding mio (which I love) and it doesnt help. Its not that I don't like it, I'm just never thirsty. It's joked among my friends and family that I Am "The Google Queen" because that's my go to for everything, if its out there I will find it. Lol I still like water I just never feel the need to drink. In the morning I have my coffee so I'm not a grumpy you know what to my husband and kids but after that I only drink with meals. I've googled it like crazy and all I've come up with is maybe you need less liquid... Base it off the color of your urine...ill go days with crystal clear urine and days of a little darker. Crystal clear means you have enough liquid which I don't now how because besides coffee I have maybe 12 oz of water in me. Days that its darker I have the same amount of liquid intake. So I'm at a complete loss!

Coffee can cause a decrease in appetite. Maybe it is causes a decrease in thirst as well.
Is your water safe? Do you have a well? Maybe there is something about the water that doesn't taste good and it needs to be checked. I once had an apartment and drank the tap water for a month or so. I got a metallic taste in my mouth for days until I put a filter on the tap. It was an old building and some of the metal from the pipes was seeping into the water.

No we have the big water machine that u buy the big jugs for that I drink from. I'm just rarely thirsty for some reason. I used to drink 6 cans of mt. Dew a day now I don't drink any, I used to drink a full pot of coffee every morning now it's 2 cups. I'm gonna mention it to my PCP and see what she says about it cuz I know it's not healthy and I can't seem to just force myself to drink.

Dehydration can cause a lack on interest in drinking. Sad but true. We have this problem with elderly folk. They don't drink because they are not thirsty and then they feel sick because they are dehydrated.
I REALLY don't recommend that you flavor your water with that fake stuff. It ain't good for you.
Frankly, its best to just suck it up and drink the stuff wether you want to or not. Smaller people often only need 6 cups a day, regular sized people about 8. We need more if we workout or sweat a lot. Measure out what you have to drink and chug-a-lug. I suggest 4 servings of 2 cups. If you do more than 2 cups at once, you may give yourself a belly ache.
Luke-warm water goes down faster, although some people like the taste better when it is cold. A big straw can make it go down faster. I like carrying a water bottle with me. I get fidgety, and sipping on my water bottle is generally allowed in polite society these days, so I take advantage of that.

I need lots of water so the Miralax, Citrucel and food fiber has something to work with. One trick I do is, I put two water bottles in front of my coffee cup on the counter. I tell myself, if you want a cup of coffee(yes, yes, please!) then you have to drink these two water bottles first. Also when I get on the treadmill I bring a water bottle, it's important to water up during and/or after exercise. I've found that cold water doesn't cut it for me in winter Image so I'll make myself some green tea or even warm water with lemon in it to get some fluid in me.

Hi, I rarely drink just plain water. Instead I do half a glass of juice and add half water. Grape juice is great for that. You can add half to a bottle of water and it tastes great. You can also drink smoothies in the morning, lemonade, even kool aid. When I was in the hospital they even gave me Popsicles to push fluids. The only thing they told me to be careful with was caffeine.
