LIS tentatively scheduled for Friday...

Postby torninhell » 19 Jun 2013, 09:39

Hi everyone... After months of misery and stupidly hoping I could go at this alone, I finally caved and begged begged begged my mother to take me to a doctor! The first doctor I went to was a general surgeon/plastic surgeon, and he recommended LIS. I was reluctant, of course, because I wanted to find a CRS first... But everyone I knew who worked in the medical field didn't know anyone to recommend and hadn't even heard of anyone specializing in colorectal surgery.
Then yesterday, in a bid of depression and desperation, I did a search on the internet. Lo and behold, an item I had never seen before cropped up--a website for a private hospital down these parts that has a Colorectal Specialists Clinic. Needless to say I asked my mom to book me an appointment immediately. So today we went!
Naturally he had to do an exam but I couldn't stand it when he would manipulate down there... so I have to get an examination under anesthesia. He said he'll be doing it before the procedure is done so the anesthesia won't have to be done again.
Now I have no health insurance or health care... so I have to shoulder all the costs. The thing is, I DON'T CARE ANYMORE! The double fissure has brought me to my knees (apparently I have an anterior AND a posterior fissure, along with a hypertrophic anal papilla. Joy) and I would do anything to get it gone.
So after that novel-length rant... I just wanted to say how absolutely nervous I am about the surgery, especially the first BM after! I'm also scared of the post op pain. Especially since I'll be doing it out-patient and I'll be recovering at home. Wish me luck that the procedure really works and my fissure won't recur... I can't afford another LIS after this!! :S
For those who are living in the Philippines (I know there were a couple members here who are from my country), I'll be having my operation at The Medical City (where the Colorectal Specialists Clinic is located) and it will cost me in the ballpark of 70-80,000 PHP (more if I get admitted). That's roughly USD2000 to anyone who might be curious about it!

I'm so sorry that you have to shoulder the expense yourself, but will wish you well on Friday. I hope that you report back afterward, so that others, like me, can hear how it went.
Good luck!

I wish you well with your surgery. I don't have health insurance, either, so you're not alone. My pain is currently manageable and my fissure is healing, but if I was in horrid pain all the time, I'd get the surgery done ASAP, no matter the cost. Any cost is worth it if you can get your life back.
Best wishes and good luck with the surgery!
January 2013 - Diagnosed with fissure. Eventually turned chronic.
History of IBS and anxiety disorder, along with fear of using bathrooms other than my own caused it.
Tried Diltiazem, but eventually developed a rash.
LIS surgery scheduled August 26th.

Hello Torn,  I'm glad that you've found a specialist in your area who will be doing the LIS.  I got a lot of recommendations for good doctors but the Primary Care Physician insisted on a colon rectal specialist.  I have LIS scheduled for July 10th.  I had to wait until then so I'd two weeks to recover.  I'm hoping that is long enough!
I can fully understand about your concerns;  I have the same concerns.  The first BM and post op pain have me to the point where I can't think about much else.  I keep getting told by the CRS that it's no big deal and it will be fine,  but this is my first operation so I'm well aware of how you feel.  From what I've read, the most important thing to reduce the risks of a retear is a diet with a lot of fruit, vegetables and plenty of water.  Keeping the area clean is important too which seems hard to me.
After all of the pain that you've been through, I hope that this goes well for you.  Try to keep positive, (I'm still working on that too!) and be sure to post how things are going.  Best wishes.

Hi Torn. I had my surgery 33 hours ago and I have only taken Tylenol and Ibuprofen. They wrote me a prescription for Lortab and I haven't touched it. I too was more nervous about this than anything. My daughter is 2 1/2 and birthing was nothing compared to the constant pain. First poop was easy. I've been sore so far and that's it. I was crying, waiting for them to take me back to surgery. I also had three skin tags lopped off. What I'm getting at here is I think you will be fine. Go in there on Friday and say to yourself "this is the day I will start to get my life back". I'm praying for you, but I honestly believe you will do great. If you have any questions, please ask! I'd be happy to tell you whatever I can to ease your mind about whatever your biggest worries are.

Hi everyone.. thank you very much for all the well wishes and support. They moved my appointment back to Saturday because the schedule for Friday was full. I guess it's okay though, one more day of torture after everything won't kill me. At least the doctor was kind enough to prescribe me Dolcett (sp?), which made going to the toilet less nerve wracking due to the dulled pain.
Today I am also going to visit a psychiatrist (first time in my life!) because of the depressed state these fissures have put me in. Also, I think it would help to psych me up for the surgery!
@chachacha
I plan on starting a fissure diary and a healing diary as well :)I definitely want to keep everyone up to date. If my story helps anyone the same way everyone's stories on this forum helped me, I'll be happy.
@Luka
My parents (who are for now paying for my operation) keep joking that I must have hidden some gold in my butt, since it's so expensive!
@georgethecatman
Naturally noting beats a specialist, right? My dad keeps insisting I find a cheaper general surgeon, but why compromise and risk side effects when you have a CRS ready to help you? I'm very very nervous about post op everything, but as you said I'll definitely be keeping to a good diet. Everyone's stories on this forum about how their first post-op BM went helps too. Good luck on your own LIS and I hope you update us about it too! Long waits for relief are terrible, but you're right to find a time where you can get time off to recover :)
@courtknee
I haven't even gotten pregnant yet and I've already got fissures... what more if I did get preggers? No thank you I think I'd rather adopt. T_____T We will see though... maybe it won't be so bad if I got pregnant and got a C-Sec? :/ Anyway I'm sad to hear that the fissure pain is worse than childbirth! You're right though, I'm looking forward to my operation on Saturday because I'll finally be getting my life back! Thank you so much. :)

Best of luck for Saturday. I will be rooting for you!!
I think it's a really good idea to see a psychiatrist... These fissures affect us mentally just as much as physically. I practically had a major anxiety break down because of mine. It can only do your anxiety s good to talk them over, and hopefully you will feel a lot calmer for Saturdays procedure... Which will bring an end to this terrible chapter in your life!

Igrik, thank you very much. I wish you luck with your search for a CRS that does LIS too!
OMB, thank you very much. I just saw my psychiatrist today, she recommended several coping techniques for pain and many things I could do to be able to deal with my situation! She actually even psyched me up for surgery. I totally agree, it's good to go to someone you can talk to and who will know what kind of advice to give you--it's important to also deal with the emotional pain that comes with our problem!

Torn, that stinks that you have developed a fissure before ever even having a baby, but I definitely agree about the c-section. I'd love to have another baby and if I ever feel 100% again and feel like I can do pregnancy, I will for sure do a c-section. Just think, once you do this, pregnancy and a c-section will be a breeze. I'm so excited for you! Keep me posted :)
