Nifedipine cream versus Diltiazen cream

Postby cherylk » 19 May 2008, 12:38

Are there any stats re: which cream is best, or is it just an individual thing? (i.e. one cream might work for some best, and the other cream works better for others). I have an appointment with my CRS tomorrow and am now in my 5th week of using the Diltiazem/Bethanechol ointment. I am feeling better. Thanks for any feedback

Hi,
I have been using the Nifedipine ointment now since March 8, although I was told the first month didn't count because I was using it only on the outside.
This last week has been encouraging for me, it seemed before that I would never get over this. Hoping the good feeling lasts Image , I have been having less pain and bleeding this past week. I had been very troubled by ongoing muscle spasms that went on all day, the mornings were good until bm's then maybe an hour later I had spasms the rest of the day.
Hopefully this will encourage other ointment users, it does sometimes take awhile to relax the area to allow things to heal. I definitely feel less pressure recently.

Good luck to everyone.

Jo,
Glad to hear that you are feeling better.
I had heard that the Nifedipine cream was only available through Mayos. Is that where yours was prescribed or is the Nifedipine cream available through other docs as well?
Thank you,
Cheryl K.

Nefedipine is widely available in the US. It's a BP capsule for most people, but for AF, it is compounded with a base like vaseline and usually a little lidocaine.
Ditto for Diltiazem. They are both basically the same meds, and each should work as well as the other.

Glad you girls are feeling better :)
Thank the heavens for Diltiazem Image
I have been using it for a year now, down to once per day now :)

My CRS only gave me enough Diltiazem for one month (I think). I am wondering if there is no danger in using the cream indefinitely? My Mayo CRS doc told me to use it for a minimum of 6-8 weeks even if I am feeling better.
Another thought--with all of these fruits and veggies we are eating, we will all probably live to be Centenarians--hopefully sitting comfortably in our rockers with no butt pain!

I used Diltiazem for 6 months 3 times a day. Even after my fissure was healed I figured it couldn't do any harm. My doctor gave me quite a few refills and didn't seem concerned that I was using it after healing. I still have some I am saving for a special occasion.

Yeah Cheryl, I would love to sit in that rocking chair with my butt being the last thing on my mind!

I've used the blood pressure med for 2+ years. all that happens with the nitro is that I get headaches and lightheaded. With the others, the only perceptible effect is in my rear.
