I have exactly the same problems as you, Alyssa, and quite a few of us on here do. It seems once the fissure heals we are still left with residual pain, in my opinion possibly caused by nerve damage. There are so many nerves in that area.

I have tried everything, except trying a small dose of anti-depressant which is meant to help (Amitryptyline). The only time I get real relief is when I am asleep, and I take .05mg of Lorazepam to help this. I can only presume that the "muscle relaxant" helps me. Do a search on google for Amitryptyline and anal fissures (and on here too, using our very helpful Search facility which is just under the forum name above).

I am using my iPad right now and it's a bit difficult to give links!

Do you think it's possible for it to be missed by 4 different doctors (2 general surgeons/ 2 crs)? Next month, I'll be seeing a different crs with much more experience. I guess I should try just using Vaseline for a period of time to see if it helps..

Savalci,

I have asked the doctors for medication and the only thing they told me is to take ibuprofen or Tylenol (no relief); does this medication need to be prescribed by a doctor or can I buy it over the counter? I don't have any trouble with sleeping... Well other than waking up to feed my 4th month old. Has anyone who has experienced these symptoms been referred to a pelvic floor therapist or neurologist? Have they had any improvement?

Both are prescription meds. I doubt your doctor would prescribe Lorazapam, but if you can take some literature on Amitryptyline, he might consider it. I will try and find a link or two when I have a better Internet connection.

Yes, I was sent for pelvic floor therapy which I kept up for near on a year. I didn't notice any improvement in my anal pain to be honest.... But it's worth a go - especially as you have not long had a baby.

I think it is definitely possible that four doctors are missing something. I had a general surgeon tell me to go to PT for my spasms. He couldn't have been more wrong, CRS gave me LIS and I'm cured. I'm so glad I knew better than to listen to him. Hopefully your new doc will give you the help you need.
Developed fissure from constipation due to breastfeeding 7 weeks after delivery (Jan 2014)
Nifedepine
Colace
Magnesium
Miralax - godsend
Nitro - some improvement
LIS (May 2014) - cured for 3 months then setback
Diltiazem
Feeling better for now

I just had my appointment with another CRS (Oakland, Kaiser); he also didn't see any active fissures although I have explained what has been going on with me. He suggested that I do botox but I am apprehensive about it. Has anyone tried botox even though the fissure(s) has not been detected upon examination?

Savaici,

You mentioned that you have tried everything... Can you tell me what are the things you've tried to relieve the "residual pain".

MAma,

I no longer have the paper cut sensations.. or pain with bowel movements. those symptoms subsided. The Botox to the pelvic floor muscle relieved those sensations. Unfortunately I still suffer from chronic pain (nerve) pain caused by the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), very complicated stuff. Let me know if you have any further questions.
