As far as i know the surgery helps you heal by reducing the tension of the sphincter and the effect this has on circulation.
It doesn't make your anal canal brand new but it helps people with higher tensions sphincters heal.
If you keep your stools soft you will heal again and probably quicker.

I have not done the surgery (yet) but from my experience it works like that.

I had 5 operations Lateral internal sphincterotomy and the fissure always came back. Doctors seem to have it right on the 6th time -I`m 2 months post 6th lis and its still covered with healthy mucosa not giving signs of ripping again. However Im still in pain most of the time because of nerve damage caused by previous operations. Choose your surgeon wisely.
