botox vs lis

Postby normajeanchariot » 28 Sep 2016, 06:43

Hi everyone. I'm trying to decide whether to go with botox or lis. Personally, I really don't like the idea of injecting a toxin into my body. I've read plenty of reports of people having problems with this. Like when it is injected into the face for cosmetic reasons, things like blindness are 'common'. I mean that's pretty serious stuff right there. The toxin has actually travelled through the body. Some have found traces of botox in different parts of the body. Some suffer from depression, anxiety, a whole host of side effects.

I have ibs and very often have diarrhea (like sometimes i'll have it everyday). This makes me really concerned about getting lis because I'm worried that any form of incontinence, even if it was minor, could get particularly 'messy' if i had diarrhea every day.

What do ya'll think?

I decided to have LIS instead of Botox for the reasons you cite above. Another very scary outcome I read about involved the Botox migrating to someone's lungs and then they couldn't breathe well! Also, my surgeon didn't believe that Botox worked very well. His own statistics on LIS success however (after 35 years and 1,000's of procedures), were very impressive. Almost all patients' fissures healed (95%), and none were left incontinent. He said that only one colleague, in all of those years, had had a negative result on the continence front, and that was only to gas.

Others though, on this board and elsewhere, have had good success with Botox, and I imagine that the nightmare scenarios that you have posted about, and the one I bring up here, are very rare.

I do think that statistics are all over the place though, because of the different skill-level and experience of the surgeons performing the procedure, so I think that it's important to ask your individual CRS what his or her outcomes have been.

It's a very hard decision to make, and I only had to finally make my mind up when my quality of life became unbearable, so I wish you lots of luck with yours.

I've been trying to find a surgeon. Today I spoke with the admin lady of one particular surgeon who said exactly that - that he had never had someone get incontinence from an lis he had. The guy sounds good at what he does but I'm so suspicious of everything. 4 things:

1) a few years ago he made a very public announcement to the media that the hospital he was working in had services comparable to a third world country. He spoke about the shortcomings of the current political party. Makes me think it was all a political stunt.
2) he is on some sort of board whereby he can be called upon by a judge to investigate and say whether a surgeon was doing everything right or not. At least that's how I understand it. Combining this with the previous point, this makes me feel like he's being used by someone higher up. Am I crazy for thinking like this??
3) he claims he's never caused incontinence.. I don't actually believe this. Again leaves me questioning his integrity and motives.
4) ok this one's slightly funny but he has some hella thick fingers.. that's not gunna be fun when he does an examination!!

I had Botox and it gave me 2 months of normal life but my fissure is long and deep so it hasn't healed it very much at all. HTD another member on here has been healed 90% by Botox. As for the nightmare scenarios well....they put human growth hormones in cows and we drink that milk and heaven only knows what all the mobile phones are doing to us. I guess I'm saying life is full of risks, would I have Botox...not for a fissure my size but my doc wouldn't do LIS until they had tried Botox. If your fissure is small or fairly new I would say give it a go.
I have IBD and could often go 10/30 times a day before my fissure now I have upped my meds and only eat safe foods so I don't go that often....I asked my surgeon who specialises in IBDs whether my risk of incontinence was increased his answer was yes a little as you can imagine it's harder to hold in niagra falls than a ball, but he did say that it's still not a high risk as long as the cut they have to make isn't too long. My fissure is very long hence the Botox first to try and get it a bit shorter.
Only you can decide which is best for you but have a word with a few docs see what they say if you aren't having to pay then the more information the better.
I hope you manage to find what works and please if you do have LIS could you write a diary as I can't have mine till the new year now and would love to hear others experiences.
