That sounds good raoden - hope the trend continues!

That's great you got that appointment! It must be reassuring to know that if things don't improve or if this happens again, you have someone to see. It sure is scary - the pain is like no other! Everything else seems like a breeze in comparison. I used to whine at getting blood drawn - HA

Unfortunately I took a turn for the worse today. I thought I am doing all the right things. Eating healthy foods with fiber, lots of water. I am taking 2 100mg colace during the day and a full dose of Miralax at night. But half my stools were fully formed and had a lot of trouble to get it out today morning. It felt like there was a lot of stretching and some pain. But it wasn't that thick. There was no blood I could see. But I am still in bed 4 hours after the BM, from the burning, stabbing pain. A nurse from the CRS office called as they have earlier openings. So I advanced my appointment to Monday at 11:00. I want to get a specialist to check it out soon.

I am also very worried about my work as I have been taking a lot of sick days. Have a call with my manager to discuss this. Will find out what he thinks today. Luckily I have disability benefits at work. But hoping and praying i don't need to go there.

Buttercup feel free to follow this thread. We are all here to help and comfort each other through this terrible ailment.

Ah no! That certainly is a familiar feeling. I'm no doctor, but I suspect your internal sphincter is just not cooperating. When you go, it's painful, so the sphincter tightens protectively instead of relaxing, and that makes it harder and more painful to have a bm. Then the bm itself causes more pain in spasm - probably why you're feeling for hours after. That's what I understand happens with those darn spasms!

Try and hang in there until your appointment - the CRS will get this fixed for you, and you are seeing the best! They know exactly what to do! And for most people, healing doesn't seem to be too linear - very up and down. A bad day today may be your last, you never know!

Are you having any bleeding during or after bms??

Thanks a lot for the encouraging words. I have not spotted any blood in stools for the last 2 days. I am thinking that has got to be a positive thing. I am on a quest for the right foods to get the stools to the right consistency. I ate some kidney beans yesterday as they have a lot of fiber not sure if that caused the fully formed bm. Will keep this thread updated on my quest for toothpaste consistency stools.

My stools seem to be going more and more towards Bristol 4 now. Whatever I do can't get it to Bristol 6. Just had one day of 6 and no pain that day. 4 or 5 hours of burning pain after BM for the last 2 days now.

I notice a lot of people talk about spasms. I am trying to understand what everybody means by that is it the burning pain or the clenching feeling you feel? For me the burning pain is much worse than the clenching, but clenching is bad as well. Anyway trying to understand this thing better.

Hi raoden,

I just read your post. I also had a problem with hard tip of stool... then gradually managed to make it soft with my diet and 2 times bowel movements a day.

Try to balance soluble and insoulble fibre. (Search the forum topic 'soluble and insoluble fibre' for more info)

Don't overdo fibre as it bulks up the stool. Suppositories great. What I did was, before BM, smearing lots of vasaline and putting lil bit inside as well. Then injecting KY Jelly - water based lubricant (which is safe for everyday us as per multiple pharmacists) through syringe (as the mouth of syringe is too small that you wont even feel it). It made a lot of difference for me.

Also I read in this forum of using coconut oil to put in rectum before sleep which makes stoll softer for BM. Drink lots lots of water, as fibre absorbs lots of water. If you take more fibre and less water, you may end up with hard stool.... so drink lots of water.....

Let me know how you are feeling now...

Hi FissureVictim,

I am still suffering with the initial part of my bowel movement. I have started looking more closely and I am wondering if it is just well formed stools but not hard really. It is just that I am so clenched it is tough to come out. It seems to help me to have a hot sitz bath to loosen things up before I go. So for the last few days I feel things stretching, but not extremely painful. Don't see any blood either. The pain after BM has improved somewhat. I am able to sit with a heating pad now, previously the only thing I could do was lie down on my side hoping it will subside.

As you are saying I need to read a bit about soluble/insoluble fiber. Being a vegetarian anything I eat has fiber, but I need to get more of the right kind in. I do drink a lot of water close to 100oz (3 liters)

I am too afraid to stick anything in there due to pain. Maybe I should try coconut oil or vaseline. I have been using coconut oil in my sitz bath, but have not inserted it in

That sounds good raoden! I think you're right that things are just too tight right now but will relax as it heals and going will be easy again. I've learned that really loose stools are good either - it is difficult to clean and to feel finished, and often irritates the area more than a soft-but-formed stool. So you may be actually at a good point in terms of consistency.

I agree with fissure victim on both fronts. If you can do some sort of librication, I think it would help! I had very hard stool trapped after my surgery, and although it was a little painful, I used a syringe with a think tip (well lubricated with Vaseline) to insert some mineral oil. This does help soften up whatever's there and lubricates during a bm - double duty.

From my experience, most veggies have lots of insoluble fibre - I know because this is the kind my ibs can't tolerate, so I generally can't eat much veg. But soluble fibre like Metamucil/psyllium fibre helps with both constipation and diarrhea by absorbing liquid into the stool and keeping shape, so it's perfect for soft but formed stool.

Hope you'll continue to see improvement!

Hi raoden,

Great that you are heading in right direction.. My thinking is, 3 litres is common for everyone. But we take more fiber than common people, so we need more than 3 litres of water.

I am also a vegetarian by birth. We need to be careful about fibre balance. I was having soft stool without hard tip from 5 weeks and healed 70-80% (I guess). Constipated lil bit and back to square one (though it took lil less time to feel better this time.

Now from 1 n 1/2 week, I am having again well formed stool without hard tip. I will share my regimen if it helps in any way.

Morning waking up, having a glass of water, BM followed by sitz bath, shower then applying ointment (Nifedipine+Lifocaine+bit of hydrocortisone). 2 slices of whole wheat bread (5gm fiber in each slice) with tea. Taking lactulose 20 ml

Inbetween eating one carrot, handfull of
snow peas (sweet peas), apple, any another fruit, water (4-5 liters as I nurse my lil one). Lactulose before sleep (20ml).

Also trying to eat cooked veggies with the lunch and dinner. Cooked veggies are easy for digesting.

Sitz bath in the afternoon. Applying Ointment. Another BM in the evening follwed by sitz bath and applying ointment.
Sitz bath before sleep and applying ointment. I do sitz bath 4 times and apply ointment everytime after sitzbath as muscles will be lil relaxed after sitzbath and helps to put ointment lil further. Also a glass full of warm milk with a spoon of ghee (Indian) anytime in a day (preferably in the night).

Walk of 30-45 mins. Engaging yourself with friends and family. If you can't go out much, invite your friends over and play indoor games. I have my big fat family with me which is helping me to divert my mind.

These things helped me so far. Fingers crossed until my next appointment with GS on May 03.

Thanks for the replies GG and FissureVictim.

I am thinking of trying to add some Metamucil in low quantities to see if it helps in anyway. Any suggestion on when it would be best (Morning/Night)?

I have been trying to avoid all bread. I have been on a Brown Rice, Oatmeal and Lentils/beans diet besides veggies and fruites. No Milk/coffee/tea as well. FissureVictim do you eat whole wheat bread or something else?
