I’m considering lis surgery but I’m young

Postby IWantANewButt » 28 Feb 2018, 13:34

Hi I’m new here, just need some advice.

I have been dealing with fissures since I was 17 and I am now 20. I can’t remeber when it started but it was definitely as I was doing my A-levels, it was actual hell

I went for Botox after a year of pain every day, which I thought would be the end to it but it wasn’t :x The Botox definitely helped me improve but I did start to get re tears so I went back to my colorectal surgeon and he put me on the diltiazem cream, which I used religiously for like 6 months. Throughout this whole experience I’ve been taking Laxido daily and using coconut oil when I felt like I needed it. I am very careful with my diet and try to drink enough, so I’m not sure why I haven’t improved.

So I’ve read on here about the lis surgery and I was wondering if they’d still do it for me even though im young. I’m just fed up of the constant re tears, and then I think I’m better for like a month and it just happens all over again. Not to mention it’s a pain trying to just deal with everyday life and uni. Just want it over with.

I’m also from the uk, and I’ve not heard of many people getting it here from the forum. Anyone had lis surgery that is from the uk?

Should I ask my colorectal surgeon about lis? Has anyone else had lis surgery at a young age? Will he still do it if I have improved but I’m still not 100%?

Please help me :thanx:

Hi sorry to hear your suffering,
I’m from the U.K. and like Katie have had Botox and LIS. Are you female as that may make a difference as to whether you are offered LIS.
If you have a resting pressure test....some CRS’s do them, others prefer to just do an exam...and your pressure is above 100 then they really have no reason to turn you down. If they do and your certain you need the LIS, then go to a different hospital and see a different CRS. It took me 3 goes and a private consult before I found someone willing to take a chance on me (I have crohns and am considered high risk).
Some NHS trusts insist on Botox twice before LIS and there is no bending those rules no matter what.
There is absolutely no reason why you should have to live in pain even if it’s not the agonising spasms. Twenty years ago you would have been given the LIS no questions asked but now we have options so some doctors like to “move with science”. For me if it has worked for decades then it’s good enough.
Yes if your female and your planning to have babies later on your pelvic floor may weaken. But the risk of incontinence is minimal and what the NHS and many CRS’s don’t tell you is that even occasional slight soiling on underwear is classed as incontinence. They make you feel like you will have to wear incontinence pads...my current CRS has been practising for 24 years and has only seen one case of incontinence...very mild...and that on,y lasted for 18 months until the sphincter started to regain tone again.
Good luck and I truly hope you get the treatment you need

Thanks so much for your reply, before the Botox I was in absolute agony every day, it just worries me I’m going to end up back how I was. I ended up going private because I just felt like it was taking too long on the NHS, so hopefully there won’t be any problems there. I just feel like I’ve ran out of options now other than surgery.

Hi I'm not from UK but am from Ireland so not too far away! I had the constant re tears like you and each time thinking this might be the last time only to have another flare up over and over. I had Botox twice and also had banding with the 2nd botox to see if that would help. I also used diltiazem after the 2nd botox. The botox definitely improved my symptoms but didn't fully work so I had LIS nearly 2 weeks ago.

Id definitely recommend you discuss it as an option with your surgeon. It's too soon to say if it's worked yet for me but apart from the expected pain post surgery I haven't had the side effects that I had post botox. I had some incontinence after botox so was worried re LIS but my surgeon said as i hadnt had any kids and no previous anal surgery that he was quite confident that i wouldnt have incontinence after LIS and i havent had any.

I had definitely improved after the 2 lots of botox and the surgeon still recommended the LIS so I'd say it should also be an option for you.

Best of luck & I hope you find a treatment that works very soon!

Thanks for your reply, I went to the doctor today and he’s referred me to a specialist after I asked for the surgery so it’s looking good :D
