I had my surgery today!!

Postby Guest » 27 Mar 2007, 19:33

I am pretty new here, so most of you probably don't really know much about me. However, I went in today to have the Botox injections to help my fissure heal. When my CRS was using the anuscop (sp) to give me the injections, he also found a fistula and another fissure ( I believe). So he gave me the injections, cut the fistula open to let it heal from the inside out, and he removed 3 skin tags. Whoa! that was a mouthful. So far I am much better already. Not in nearly as much pain as I have been. I haven't had a BM yet though. For those of you wandering about the botox, My CRS told me I would be back on my feet and only a little sore by the next day. He is located in Charleston, SC and is a true specialist in his area. He has written a book call "Shining Light on Constipation" Seems like a lot of people with a fissure also have constipation. My was caused from chronic diarrhea(sp).
If anyone has had the surgery for the fistula and the skin tags, I would really love to know how it went and how long before I am back to normal, as far as having a BM and what to expect as far as pain? Also any tips to help me heal faster!! Thank you!! I have already learned a lot from this site in the short time I have joined you!!
Good Luck and Happy Healing to everyone!

Wow Sheri-that's wonderful you are already feeling better. I felt so bad for you the last time we posted because you were in so much pain.
It sounds like you have a wonderful doctor. That may be a good excuse for me to get to the Charleston area although it is 4 hours away!
You will have to keep us updated on how your progress goes. I am supposed to have a skin tag removed next month so you'll have to let me know how your healing goes.
I am still confused about what a fistula is? Is that a byproduct of the fissure or was that a separate condition unrelated?
So glad to hear that you are doing better. Did they have to give you any pain relief medication? I would take it before you have a BM for the first few times and then get into the tub. Also the lidocaine can help too.
Hope you are doing okay tomorrow! Have a good night,

a fistula could be a by-product of the fissure or a hemmy or any type of lesion that would cause an opening in the anal/rectal area.
what happens is that this particular opening does not get clean enough and the yucky stuff that passes through, some of it gets trapped in there. well, pretty soon, there's a whole lot of yucky stuff getting trapped in there with nowhere to go and you begin to form an abcess. sometimes, if not all the time, the feeling of a fistula is as if you are sitting on the tip of a pin cushion - you feel a throbbing pain and like a mass is stuck down there that is tender.
now that's just the beginning of the fistula. the fistula really begins to make things more complicated when the abcess still is trapped and has nowhere to go, so it tries to find a way out, creating a "PATH" or a "TUNNEL" underneath the tissues until it reaches an exit.
usually, you see the exit on the outside of the anus or in the butt cheeks, sometimes these exits can tunnel inside and you don't see it at all from the outside.
there are many types of fistulas. there can be fistulas made to the vagina and to other organs. fistulas can occur anywhere there is an abcess in the body so it is not limited to the anus/rectum area. there are throat fistulas for example.
****
to remove the fistula, the doctor has to insert a thin wire/rod in the exit/opening and see where it leads. once the other side has been traced, then the tunnel is cleaned out and the tunnel is then torn open. ie, the wire is very sharp or they use cauterization if possible to open it. so the whole tunnel becomes exposed, allowing the fistula to heal. for some fistulas, they also can leave a "plug" in so that there is closure to the tunnel. so there are ways to deal with the fistula.
that is a fistulotomy.
it looks really scary on video......
and that was the main reason i turned to macrobiotics when after 3 years of having the fissure, the doctor said i had a fistula.
i was terrified.
****
after a month on macrobiotics, i did a wonderful turn around and was able to cancel my fissurectomy and fistulotomy and i've been good ever since.
****
sheri, i invite you to read up on macrobiotics at www.macrobiotic.co.uk and to pick up your copy of the hip chick's guide to macrobiotics.
here's to wonderful healing and a new beginning for you!
