Should I add salt or epsom salt to sitz bath?

Postby Guest » 14 Aug 2007, 06:33

I am trying to heal myself instead of surgery. My main problem is itching, but I want to do all I can to help the wound heal.
Thanks,
Jennie

You can add Epsom salts to your bath. Epsom Salt is magnesium sulfate. You can get it pretty readily at drugstores.

i thought i would bump up this post because there is something illuminating about it!
has anyone else tried using epsom salts in their sitz baths or just simply when they do a bath in the tub?
i bring this up because i am in the middle/end of nursing an irritated and unhappy left leg and i bought some epsom salt last night to soak my leg in it.
on the box, it also recommends having the epsom salt as a laxative??!! who would have known - although we all have at one time or another taken/considered magensium as a supplement - and well, epsom salt is just pure magnesium.
so as i am here using it to soak my leg, i was thinking why haven't we really discussed epsom salts as a possible alternative to try, either as a laxative to smooth things over when really constipated or to soak your soar tushy?

Am not using any salt to my sitz bath, was wondering if it's importAnt to add salt into it to prevent infection to my fissures? Can common salt do it or it has to be Epsom salts?

Post Surgery in my Sitz bath, potassium permanganate was prescribed by the surgeon. The color of the bath was light pink and temp should was not be over 50 deg cel. as Excessive heat causes the sphincter to spasm.

Epson salt is Magnesium which is absorbed fairly quickly into the skin and has a calming and relaxing effect.
Don't use alot.. maybe just a quarter cup in a full bath..
Using too much can cause you to be groggy all day..
Unless of course its at night and you want to be.
Whats interesting is that the Ocean has high levels of magnesium in it. Why is it so many people are attracted to the beach.? Could it be the reason your so relaxed after a swim in the ocean.. Why Yes it is..
