Worried about Murilax

Postby emellebe » 13 May 2010, 13:57

So, I recently stopped taking Murilax for the first time in about a year, after going to the hospital, the doc referred me to Colace, saying the Murilax would make me have to poop and this was just a "stool softener". I've been taking the full dosage of 3 a day and I still have hard bm's and they kill my fissures, I have about 4 now :(
I am afraid I may need to go back on Murilax, but I am worried, if I ever go off of it, my body wont ever be able to produce a bm on it's own, is this a silly worry?

I'm not surprised by your experience with Miralax versus Colace to be honest. Colace and other brands of docusate sodium pills never did a thing for me. If they actually soften stool, I sure couldn't tell! For some reason docusate sodium is very popular with physicians though.
Anyway I've personally taken Miralax for a long time and so have a number of others here. To be honest I don't think any real studies have ever been done on the long term effects of taking Miralax or other polyethylene glycol laxatives. Most physicians and anecdotal evidence don't suggest that it does any harm, but who really knows. I'm personally happy to roll the dice if it keeps fissure pain away.
I don't think I'd worry about not being able to produce a BM on your own if you stop taking Miralax though. Your digestive tract isn't going to just shut down completely because you stop laxatives. Maybe BMs will be less frequent, but they're not going to stop completely. I've stopped for brief periods (when I got brave which was stupid) and still had pretty regular BMs. They were just harder and hurt like bloody hell because of my fissure.
I think I'd worry about the fissure first, and the Miralax second once the fissure is under control. 4 fissures at once is a lot, does the doc have any idea what's causing them and what plan of attack to follow?

I think the main thing to be concerned about Miralax is being dependent upon it. But if one fears that, tapering off gradually could always be an option.

I should add that when I told my GP that docusate sodium wasn't doing anything for me, his response was to just take more. He said I could take as much as up to 9 or 10 a day if I wanted to, and to just keep taking it until it helped. Ummm no thanks, I think I'll just take some Miralax...
I'm pretty sure docusate sodium just happens to be well marketed and widely available so physicians just recommend it without thinking, and since they've never had to take it themselves how would they know any better? Miralax used to be prescription only and just came off its patent this year, so hopefully physicians will be more informed of its benefits going forward. Also, Miralax is widely used in bowel prep kits used before colonoscopies, so I think a lot of docs think of it in that context. But the dose used in those situations is wwwaaaaay higher than what you're supposed to take with the OTC product.

I have been seriously neglecting my condition... :( I am picking up some more Miralax tonight because I can't take this..
I have only been "scoped" once, and I didn't let my gp get very far, and she saw at least one on the outside, and three on the inside..
So far she gave me some kind of ointment.. glycer-something? I'm not sure haha. But I am determined after finding this site to get my diet under control. I did really well for a while, but just got so frustrated that I could never really feel normal with this "problem". Oh the joy's of just casually sitting and pooping, not griping the sides of my toilet for strength, I don't even remember what that feels like. :(
I am considering the surgery, but at a completely last resort. My doc recommends a colonoscopy, so we'll see. Have any of you had one?

You need to see a colorectal surgeon ASAP or at least GI specialist : ((( !!!!!
It is VERY unusual to have that many fissures regardless of a constipation. You might have some underlying condition that is causing inflammation in your anus and it than produces so many fissures : (((.
Yes - take that Miralax if it helps - but please go and see a specialist for colorectal problems : (.
I do not want to make you worry, just want you to get the best possible care and you need it ...

I had a colonoscopy last year to make sure there was nothing else going on in my lower GI. I'll be honest, it wasn't a fun procedure, but it's over pretty quickly. Just be prepared to sit on the toilet for hours for the prep part the day before :)
I also had a abdominal and pelvic CT scan after the colonoscopy just to be doubly sure, because I'm paranoid like that.
Did your doc say where the fissures are? An experienced doc should be able to tell you if your fissures are typical or atypical based on location and appearance. I'd definitely get back on the Miralax for the time being, my own fissure already messes with me a lot, I can't imagine what three is like :(
The ointment you got is probably nitroglycerin. It may help (it won't hurt anyway) but you still want to get to the bottom of the issue.
