I am so depressed, please help :(

Postby Penton » 28 Jan 2013, 19:58

Hi, I am a 25 years old male. I have been suffering from an AF for the last 3 years. At first it would come back and heal very fast, nothing serious. I saw a Dr. for the bleeding and she said that I had a small fissure and that it would heal alone. Well, it never did. It's been bothering me ever since. For the last four or five weeks I've noticed that it has gotten worse. I bleed every time I have a BM and it hurts like hell. I am a very conservative guy and I am afraid of going to the Dr. again and having her checking out my butts. Also, I've been suffering from acid reflux and already have an appointment with a GI specialist; however, I am not sure if he is the doctor that deals with these matters. Because of all this I'm very anxious and depressed. I am afraid that it might be something worse and perhaps that's why I am afraid of going to see the Dr. I don't have any family member on my side (they live in a different country) and I don't have anyone else to share my pain with. Thanks for listening.

Hi Penton and a big welcome to our group, where you are not alone Image
Firstly, your best bet is to see a Colon and Rectal Surgeon (CRS), and believe me they have seen it all, so don't worry about that. Remember it's your health that matters. We have all been at the anxious and down place, and that is why there are so many helpful people here ready and willing to answer any questions.
GI doctors would be right for Acid Reflux, but a CRS is much the best for sorting out fissures.
Don't worry about the blood. If you read information about fissures, you will see that it is quite common to bleed. I have been doing so off and on for two years.
Your fissure is chronic and there is probably scar tissue from the tear, which is part of the problem so many of us have.
When I was examined by a CRS, I had it done while I was 'out' so I did not feel a thing. The worst part was the clear out before hand. If you see a CRS, suggest that.
Sorry your family is not around, but we do share your pain, believe me!
There is a vast amount of information on here, and anything you want to ask, feel free.

Hi Penton, Welcome to you. I am sorry that you have been in such discomfort and you do not have family with you as a support base. Hopefully this forum can give you some much needed support and information. I found it a month ago and it has been a tremendous help. Can I suggest you get reading..it will give you so much information that can be of help to you...and it takes your mind off the pain. It is time to take control of your own healing, this means getting over your embaressment and fear of what may be. I was the same and put off seeing a doctor for weeks. Modesty and fear of Cancer were the reasons I told myself. Take the plunge..it will be a great weight of your shouders. I look forward to hearing how you go. XX Pia

Hi Penton- I too am suffering right now. My surgery is scheduled for Monday, and I have 6 long days to wait. My surgeon was the 4th doctor visit and the only one who could take a look at my butt and tell me that I had a chronic fissure. A GI doctor can probably diagnose this as well. My GI doctor just listened to my symptoms and prescribed Rectiv which helped heal it at first, but then it came back. I am using the Rectiv again to try to heal it again because not using it is too painful. I am having the surgery because the fissure is unlikely to completely heal on its own and surgery has a high recovery rate. I am not afraid of the surgery. I just want it fixed!
Anyway, I am taking 2 hydrocodone and 1 Motrin (not acetominophen as it is already in the hydrocodone) to deal with the pain (3x/day). Due to constipating effects of the painkiller, I am drinking LOTS of water, apple, salad, whole grain cereal, yogurt, hummus with whole grain crackers, steamed brocolli with butter, etc. All light and easily digested. And 100 mg Colace 3x/day. Also after every BM (8am and 8pm-thank God regular) and twice mid-day, taking a sitz bath (20 minutes 4x/day)with as hot water as I can stand. Sitting on my side right now typing. I was using a heating pad but it seemed to make it worse in the long run. In the short run, it feels good, but I am not going to sit on it anymore.
I am taking FMLA till my surgery and then 2 weeks post op. I would rather be at work than being at home, but I can't take a sitz bath at work!
Definately get in with a surgeon ASAP. And don't be shy about asking for painkillers, yet you have to be careful with your diet so as to not cause constipation.
Hope this helps!

Reason: pain meds changed/Colace 3x/day

Welcome to AF family Penton....I suffered for about 9 months before I got officially diagnosed, and I completely understand the apprehension for the doctor visit. I truly wish I had sucked it up sooner and saw the CRS about my problem. I had the LIS surgery almost 2 months ago and I'm doing great. I haven't had any fissure pain since before the surgery. I had good support at home, but no one really understands what we are going through unless you have an AF yourself. I usually describe it to people as pooping shards of glass. That usually gets their attention. The problem is that pain is only temporary. It's the after muscle spasm pain later that is completely demoralizing. It controls your entire world. Just know you are not alone, and go see a specialist.

Penton, if it helps at all I am having fissure problems and reflux problems too. I'm afraid I have recently been told I need surgery to correct the reflux (this is very rare and I am a lot older than you. I am sure the right meds will sort you out. They did me for many years).
In the UK at least gastroenterologists tend to specialise in upper or lower GI problems. So you will probably need to see both.
If you would like to learn more of my reflux experiences - and I emphasise that most people do perfectly well with the right medication as I did for very many years - then I would be happy to do that by PM since not relevant to this site.
Try not to get too depressed. AF is very frustrating and recovery seem rarely a straightforward process. Most of us have setbacks whcih can be very hard to endure. But it will pass.
