Hello. So I was officially diagnosed today as having an anal fissure. I have been in pain for almost a month, but out of embarrassment, I put off going to the dr.
I thought maybe it was a hemorroid at first, so I bought some cream-which stung and some pads/wipes and those were good, but not enough. I started increasing my fiber with foods and tried a generic stool softner for a week. I kept thinking it would stop hurting eventually. But when you avoid going to the bathroom, you end up with more problems. After being woken up several times over the last few nights with bottom pain, I finally went to the Dr.
So I have 2 prescription ointments to try and she said to get meamucil-in whatever form I could tolerate, I chose the wafers and to also do miralax.
I so hope this works. Im already dreading going to the restroom. Im at work now and have an hour in between going to my next job....if this doesnt work, she brought up sxurgery.
I will take whatever tips you have to get rid of the pain and be able to use the restroom.

I have same problem. I have had fissure for a couple months.when I first got it I thought it was hemroids and used hemroids cream which is bad for fissures.then finally went to doc after pooping blood. He said could be a fissure and to drink fiber and not eat meat... Called crs and he his gonna see me Wednesday!crs said to take full 17g dose of miralax in morning and again at night every day.i will be interested in hearing what crs sees in my bum.what kind of creams did doc give you??im going to ask my crs for nifedipine cream. I heard nifedipine as the least amount of side effects.

One cream is lidocaine. Im not sure what the other is, as my husband is getting it filled now. It had to be gotten at a specialty pharmacy, because its compounded, made from a pill at the pharmacy. As soon as I get it, I'll update..or maybe someone reading this will know from this description. I dread going to the bathroom :(.

Yes I dread pooping too. At least you can pee :D
I dread peeing now also because I developed an eczema like rash that is irritated by my pee. It started soon after I started the miralax, but my doc swears it has nothing to do with miralax.when I poop I squat by standing on toilet seat then jump in shower and was butt with sprayer on end of hose. This method works great. Although today I was at dermatologists and had to sit down to poop and use toilet paper, but I was able to wet toilet paper in sink first which helps.i hope that cream helps you heal faster!keep me updated.

tntlpn sorry to hear that you are having problems with a fissure.
Fissures are notorious for been very painful luckily if you fissure is new you will have a better chance to heal, because is not chronic yet.
The lidocaine is to numb the area so you can have less pain after BMs, the other cream I imagine is a nitro type that will help bring blood to the area it does have some side effects, but the cream works, just have to be consistent.
I hope you get better soon.

Newbie too/ Metamucil? Benefiber? Other?

Postby Jema » 01 Mar 2013, 18:27

Hello, I am a newbie here as well...its nice to know theres a place to vent as well as find information and support.
We are all suffering to some degree...& sometimes it is just a pain in the ...! Not even sometimes! Daily!
I have been suffering for over 2 years now...why so long...I am just petrified to have surgery. When my fissure is bad...its BADDD....but then I go several days being ok, only until the next episode.
I had Botox about 2 yrs ago...tried every cream...and sitz baths...and yet I am still suffering.
Right now and for the past few months its been worse...just when I think it cant get worse...it does.
I heard Acupuncture and/ or Reiki can help but thats a bit "out there" for me to believe...any one have ever tried either?
I recently started up with Metamucil daily...and although it seems to help with the consistancy and my BM's are not strenuous...I am still in PAIN! Plus, I think dealing with all this has created more fissures and what I believe to be a sentinal pile.(??)/ oh such fun!
ANYONE have opinions as to metamucil or benefiber or ??? Which is better...
I definitely need to change my diet...and I need to add more Fiber...which I am afraid to for fear of always having to "go"!- its like a vicious circle.
Waiting to schedule with a specialist soon but again, surgery terrifies me. I feel like I am out of options!
I would Love to get feedback!

I was taking miralax 17g dose morning and again at night. Now I'm just taking it at night. I might start taking it in mornings again. I don't feel like my fissure is healing, but at least I haven't had blood or crazy spasms since I started miralax .i see a crs for first time on Wednesday. I'm nervous but also really excited to get this darn thing figured out!

Yes delasama...Oh goodness..the blood! Freaks me out! It looks like someone died in the toilet! Lol...just horrible. The miralax is helping have less painful BM but yet the spasms are still there...
Maybe I need to be on it longer before I really see a difference.
I read some blogs where folks said they felt Benefiber worked better for those with AF's, so I was wondering what difference was between the two.
What is a crs? Surgeon?
