BLEEDING & Scared of a Relapse POST OP

Postby yadz » 24 Mar 2011, 20:50

I was wondering if any of you experienced any bleeding weeks after a sphincterotomy? I am very scared that the fissure are going to come back. I cannot deal with this pain again. This is my 4th week post surgery, and this morning I had some pain and bleeding. Advice would be appreciated Image

Hi Yadz, Welcome to the forum here, but sorry you are experiencing some pain and bleeding. Hopefully some of the LISers can answer your question, and you can also look at some of the posts under the surgery section. I think that the answer is yes - that others have experienced pain and bleeding, and that 4 weeks post-op is not really that long after the operation, so that it can happen.
Hopefully it is just a temporary set back, and you can stick to a good routine to keep it from happening again.
Look for some posts by StevePain (who is currently having a bit of a hard time healing after LIS) and NeuropathicGuy, and I'm sure there are some others.

Yadz, it's only been 3 days since my surgery, so I can't directly answer, but Bumbutt is right...others have definitely experienced this:
http://anal-fissure.org/t2071-hello-afsf-lis-veteran-here#46635
She had episodes of pain and bleeding for 6 months before they tapered off and stopped for good.
These sort of setbacks are so common, I'm expecting to have them myself. I think you might want to consider a stool softener like Miralax/Movicol to take while you're healing. It can take a couple of years for the tissue to fully regain it's strength after it tears, so a lot of people around here just stay on Miralax for a year or two post surgery. It appears to be safe to take long-term, but even if it was risky I think I'd rather deal with the risks than more butt pain!
Best of luck!

Thank you SO much guys! I'm only at 26 years of age, and feel that life is passing me by because of this. The surgery gave me a ton of hope, and last week being three weeks after surgery, I began to go to the loo properly after ages. I was so hopeful until a couple of days ago. Felt myself immediately sinking into a depressive state when I saw the blood on the loo paper. And the pain, which almost seems like a fresh cut? I am on movicol, drink loads water, eat bran, which btw seems a bit abrasive? This is four months of my life I'll never forget -- I know I sound like a bit of a DRAMA QUEEN - but this has really made life miserable for me. From being so upbeat, in my job, to having to ask yo leave early because of the pain makes me really sad.
Bottom line, maybe my doctor had me feel a tad bit too optimistic after the surgery? Thank you so much again for feedback. I am SO glad that I found this forum!!!!!! Image

Yes, it's definetely nice with fellow sufferers!
And I think that the "mental down-trip" you are describing is all too common and well known to most people here. It's part of the game :-(
I've been "in it" for 8 months, no surgery yet, but a couple of sphincterrelaxing injections - and different gels, ointments and so on. Now I try to help the healing with dilitiazem gel and soften stools with Movicol.
I doesn't hurt unbearable anymore (or for the time being), but blood occurs quite often. Right now: none for 2 days, so I hope for the best ...
And in a way my specialist-doctors: "Be patient my friend, it'll probably last 1-2 years ..." - has made me take things easier. I'm not so affected mentally as during the first months, and the blood doesn't scare the hell out of me anymore.
Good luck with your healing!

Yadz,
I'm so sorry. This is a hard time...but I think it's still too early to judge your outcome. The truth is, we may not know for months whether the surgery works. But stay positive! The odds are really good that you'll get better.
You're hardly being a drama queen. Believe me, we all know how hard this is mentally. You go through so much...and the surgery is terrifying until you get through it, and once you do you just want the ordeal to end. I know what you mean about this problem sucking away what should be the best years of your life. I was only 28 when I got my first fissure, and I waited five years to do the surgery. I had good years where it didn't bother me much though. But I finally became determined to put a stop to this so it doesn't ruin my quality of life forever, and I WILL stop it, even if it means more than one surgery.
I think you're doing the right things, taking the Movicol, drinking the water, etc. But if you think the bran seems abrasive, drop it for a softer fiber supplement. Part of the problem is that surgeons give us unrealistic estimates of healing times. Some people do heal really fast and they are very lucky. But the reality for most people is that it takes months to heal and there likely will be setbacks and an up/down healing process.
Hang in there! And feel free to vent here...it helps tremendously.

Hello there! I haven't been on here in a while, but saw your post and want to tell you not to worry too much. It takes a while for things to get better. I had LIS 1 1/2 years ago and once in a while will still get blood.
Hang in there!

Hi there.. Don't worry too much about the bleeding and pain post-op, most of us have experienced this for the first month or two, this should subside after a while, I had LIS 8 months ago and still have pain occasionally and a bit of spotting (blood) but it's only a bit, healing can take up to 1 year and beyond for some people, this is a realistic timescale, only really lucky people will heal almost right away.

I guess my doc didn't inform me too well. I was uNder the impression that it heals after six weeks...and I would not suffer from it forever :(,
