Is it worth going to the doctor?

Postby sk22 » 27 Feb 2013, 22:58

Almost two months in and I'm thinking maybe it's time to see a doctor. I had an anal fissure in May 2012 but it healed within weeks. Retear December 30, 2012.
I was doing fine for awhile there, I had bm's every 2 or 3 days so pretty much pain free for a few days. I would always think "it's fine, I can get through this." it only hurt for the time it took to get in the bath and just sit there waiting for the pain to go away. But now for some reason I'm going every day and it doesn't feel like I'm ever getting everything out, which I read on here is bad. I don't want to push though. And I've been feeling it more and more when I sit down or when I walk.
I had a doctors appointment two weeks ago with my GP but I cancelled it. I know now that I shouldn't have, but I have real anxiety issues over going to my GP and at the time I was in the state of mind that I could get through this on my own. I also have an issue with low blood pressure, and when I was at the docs in May he said that he couldn't prescribe me any of those creams.
So is there even a point in going? If I can't get the nitro cream or that dilatizem stuff? I'm not at a point where I want to have surgery. When I had a fissure in May I didn't know about taking a hot bath, so I would just lay down for like 4 hours before the pain would even start to subside. It was worse then than it is now. I just don't know if making an appt is worth it until I've decided that I'll do botox/surgery. Opinions?
I'm also 20. Has anyone here had surgery for this that young, or heard of someone who has?
Has anyone had success with botox?

sk22 you are not alone, I have severe white coat syndrome, in which my blood pressure jumps to the roof.
It takes a long time for me to get use to a new doctor for my blood pressure to settle down.
Then is just normal. I believe the reason for this phenomena is the distraught we have developed to the big pharma, insurance and medical complex, that is there to suck us dry and hook us on unnecessary drugs and treatments.
But this life. I suggest that you get yourself a CRS and go for it, get a proper diagnostic, you will feel a lot better after, then you can get the proper treatment.
And is plenty of younger people than you here that are suffering with fissures, fistulas and hems.
I think in this time and age is more about the diets we have than anything else.

If I could do it again, I would skip the GP and go straight to the CRS. He didn't recommend surgery and was the first person to actually give me a regimen to try to heal this thing. The creams are very useful and worth the anxiety and embarrassment of going to the doctor.

Hi SK22, yes get to a CRS. I am having the Botox in 4 wks time. This was suggested by my CRS. He wants to try this first. I am in a lot of pain, and would go for the surgery now. As we wait on an NHS waiting list here in the UK, it is frustrating and soul destroying to have to put our lives on hold.
I think anybody of any age can suffer with Fissures. God I hate all those normal pooing people.

I too think it's worth a dr. visit to a CRS. I too have a heart arrhythmia that is associated with very low blood pressure (my BP can typically run 85/50). Both my CRS and gastroenterologist prescribe me topical nifedipine and it has never affected my blood pressure. It would be worth a try just to see how you do. If it affected your blood pressure you could immediately stop using it.

I would recommend going to crs.you will need a referral from a doctor though.my doctor ripped my fissure open with his finger then charged me a hundred bucks for referral.
I called a crs and he told me to cancel gi appointment and come see him!

My advice: I agree - skip the GP and go directly to the CRS. You want to see someone that deals with butt issues all day long. You may be surprised at all of the options you have and specific advice the CRS can give you. Be sure and look up online reviews to find the best CRS. Good luck!

Yes, I would get a referral to see a crs.
I have low blood pressure and was still prescribed nitro and diltiazem.
If you are not happy with your dr, how about switching to a dr feel comfortable with? I really didn't click with my old dr so I swapped. It's the best thing I ever did. My current dr is an absolute sweetheart!

Actually my bp was pretty high, before this thing started and now its low...don't know if thats a good thing or a bad thing, I do know its caused me a lot of physical confusion. I sometimes feel hazy and lost when I stand up sometimes, but my GP says I'm okay????

Hi guys, thank you so much for all of the replies. They help me a lot just knowing I have people to talk to who understand.
In Canada you have to see your GP first before you go to a specialist, at least, that's what I've been told. At my appt I'll ask for a referral to a CRS.
I've decided to make an appt with my GP about a month from now, because that's when I'll be out of school for a week and have time (kicking myself for not going back in February when I could have!) I'll ask for an early morning appt -- often the worst part of going to the dr. for me is sitting in the waiting room for hours and hours, I just freak myself out. Also those hard chairs don't help much... I think he'll take me seriously because I saw him in June about the same thing, and he knew all about anal fissures. He spends a lot of time talking to you and answering questions which I like. I just have anxiety issues around all doctors
Thank you for all the kind advice. Rachael, good luck with the botox! I hope you find success with it. I've been reading this one man's botox diary on here and he seems to be doing well since he's gotten it done!
