Stools going harder... Help

Postby Rachael 1984 » 19 Mar 2013, 05:23

Hey everyone, can anyone help me...
I am taking linseed on my oats for breakfast, plenty of water, light lunch, eve meal then yogurt and fruit for snacks.
My BM has been very uncomfortable the last few days, 2 this morning! More pain... Straight into sitz bath.. Then Dilt.
Where the hell am I going wrong? Too much fruit?! Or maybe take movicol in the morning and night instead of just at night.
Has anybody else had random days where the stools go hard for no reason?! I drink lots of water too.
Can't get the pain down....

What types of fruit ? Bananas can actually be bad. I've been sticking with oranges, pears, and prunes have been good. I've also been taking my miralax mid-day. Feel like if you just take it at night you're losing out on a lot of water.

Hi jack maniac, banana, pear and blueberry. Sometimes apple. Think I might cut out Banana to see if that is aggravating me. I will take the movicol now after lunch and try to see if that is better. Thanks. R x

Sometimes higher levels of certain kinds of fiber actually make stools harder (fiber is actually prescribed for people with diarrhea to firm up stools). You have to experiment with different forms of fiber to see what works for you. The linseeds could also be causing this, as could the oatmeal.
Also, the female hormone cycle has an effect. Many women find their stools become firmer in the week before their period.
While you experiment with your diet there is no harm in adding more Miralax.
You might want to try writing down what you eat every day, keeping track of where you are in your menstrual cycle, and noting the results in the bathroom every day.
It suddenly dawned on me, for example, that all the salads I've been eating lately have been giving me a harder time in the bathroom. The raw veggies with their insoluble fiber content have been causing me trouble, so I'm easing off and now focusing back on foods higher in soluble fiber and lower in insoluble fiber.

Bananas are actually part of the BRAT mnemonic for binding foods. Not sure about apples as applesauce is the A, so I stopped eating them.

Thanks, I am under a dietician and she is talking about putting me on the FODMAP diet for IBS. It is from Australia.
I am doing a food diary now, so hopefully I can see which foods are causing me problems?!
I will beat this... Just when???!!'

Make sure "plenty of water" is actually plenty of water throughout the day. Also don't put off going, seems the body starts to pull water rather quickly when nature is put off. Prunes and prune juice are great. Stress itself can plug you up, ironic isn't it, you're supposed to relax and not be stressed but the pain and fear work against you Image Good luck.
added: oh yeah, fiber won't move unless we do...some sort of daily exercise(no matter how small) helps get us right Image

There is an awesome book called IBS Free at Last that spells out the whole FODMAPS diet and gives you menu plans for each day.
Here's the link

Hi Rachel
Bm can be very finnicky sometimes, htough we think were doing everything right. But in your post I did not see where you mentioned your getting the exercise.
This can very very pivotal for keeping the BM nice and soft. Just a brisk walk some time after a meal will do the trick.
Thankfully since I found my culprit (bread and sodium) I'm at the point where hard BMs don't bother me anymore (knock on the nearest giant sequoia.). Just last night I had a pretty hard bm with no complications.
I do hope you continue to try to find your culprit and beat this thing. Good Luck
