Traveling with fissure

Postby Jbl22424 » 28 Sep 2014, 09:30

Hi all,
I've not done any substantial traveling since I got my fissure earlier this year. Traditionally traveling makes me quite backed up, either due to the limited food options with fiber or the dehydration from the plane? At any rate, I currently take a full dose of miralax and three colace each day. Some days I still get hard bms but I can never predict it. I have to fly to the east coast next week for work. I am bringing some mineral oil with me on my trip and I guess all I am eating is salads :) any other recommendations?

I try to remember to drink plenty of water on the plane. I find them very dehydrating.
Just usual stool softeners.... Eat sensibly..... And try to enjoy yourself!!!!

Ditto...lots and lots of water, more than you usually drink. Bring a lot of trusted snacks with you on the plane. I had to fly cross country when my fissure was new. There wasn't one thing I could eat on the plane or at the layover airport. Have you ever tried Carlson key E suppositories? I didn't like using vaseline before a BM, so I tried those. They aren't laxatives, but help things move smoothly and prevent irritation. Good luck and hopefully you can relax and have fun!

My emergency last line of defense in case of trouble is Milk of Magnesia. It has never failed to produce the desired effects. Of course along with all your regular medications I would make a little trouble shooting bag to include lubricant, numbing cream, enema bottle, wipes, heating pad, suppositories and a rinse bottle since a sitz bath is impractical to take on a plane (or maybe not?). I know it seems like overkill but its better than being caught off guard. You would probably be able to relax more knowing you have anything you might need. I would also put that in my carry on so you are not separated from it. Just some of my thoughts.

Don't forget the rules about flying with liquids - you will need small containers for each product. Also, while you do need to stay hydrated, it's a royal pain to have to get up to use the toilet on a flight, so don't overdo it. Can you get an aisle seat?
Nifedipine/lidocaine, no help
Diltiazem, effective, but caused major rash
Nitroglycerine, effective.
Topical estrogen for final healing.
Gentle heat to bottom - pain relief, muscle relaxant
Kondremul mineral oil
Time - lots of time.

Thank you all! Great suggestions. I took miralax packets, packed some benefiber in a baggie, and brought my colace and magnesium pills. I also poured mineral oil into a travel bottle since I always carry on. All of that did the trick and had no troubles on my adventure. Whew!
