Depth of cut in LIS

Postby kpain » 22 Jan 2014, 17:15

I am still fighting my second bout of AF. First time was a cake walk that healed on its own. This time seems to be heading towards becoming chronic. Its been more than 8 weeks. Mild spotting and burning sensation that lasts between 2 and 4 hours. But no spasms. My CRS has given me additional 2 months to see if it heals. If not, then try botox. If Botox fails, then surgery.

Anyways, from my last visit to CRS, I casually asked him about depth of cut in LIS and he mentioned it would normally be about 10mm (1 cm). I was surprised to hear this as it sounded too deep. But I am not a specialist or in medical field. Anyone who had LIS know what is the normal depth of cut? Is the depth of cut dependent on the size of the fissure?

Hello kpain,

In the olden days the sphincterotomy cut was always around 10mm in length however this approach is no longer taken. LIS is classed as tailored sphincterotomy so the length of the cut will be identical to the length of the fissure itself. In my case the length was 4mm and i've read that another board members cut was 5mm. I very much doubt any surgeon would carry out a 10mm cut unless absolutely necessary
