Update of my problems post LIS

Postby sotiredofthis » 22 Oct 2014, 18:23

I had LIS on April 28th but have never been pain free. My fissure did heal but has felt like it has re-torn 4 times. All 4 times only lasted a couple of days with the help of Rectiv. I think I'm developing a sensitivity to Rectiv though as it was causing some definite soreness, burning, rawness with prolonged use.

I saw my CRS in July because I've not been out of pain since the surgery. Mostly only when sitting. She could see some scar tissue that healed weird and when she touched it I thought I was going to literally jump off the table. It was so painful!!! When I sit my but opens just enough to pull on the scar causing burning pain. She said she could do another surgery to "release" the tissue and stitch it back up the other direction so it would heal straight and smooth. I also developed another weird skin tag near the incision site that is hard and can be painful. She wants to remove that as well.

She did another pressure test and thankfully my pressure is closer to normal. It's the same pressure all the way around my anus now. The first time it was 3 times the normal rate just where the fissure was. It's still a little high though.

So I'm scheduled for another surgery next Friday, Oct. 31st to have the scar tissue addressed and remove the new skin tag. She says this shouldn't be as painful as my LIS as she's not going anywhere near as deep as before. No muscle will be cut and no deep incision like before.

I'm not looking forward to any of this as it's only been 6 months since my last surgery but I can't live this way anymore either. My CRS is a 3 hour drive each way and when I got home tonight I was in so much agony from sitting so long!

I'm holding on to hope that this will be the final fix and I can be pain free! Please say a prayer for me!

Best of luck STOT and thanks for keeping us posted on your progress! Hopefully this surgery is not as painful just like your CRS says and does the trick for good. Maybe you can try diltiazem for any other small tears? I've been using it and it has been working well for me. Best of luck!!!

Thanks Jbl. My CRS said if I have any other tearing issues she would put me on Diltiazem instead of Rectiv this time. Hopefully that won't be necessary though!

How are you doing now?

Doing better. Pain free for about a month now. Hoping it stays this way! I will not be stopping miralax for 6 months at least this time.

Any updates after your second surgery? I feel like I've been experiencing the same thing as you sotiredofthis. I had LIS surgery April 4th, and the incision never quite healed, and the CRS described granulation tissue that looked like a tongue sticking out of my incision when I went back in 3 months after the surgery. My incision was still oozing a tiny bit with occasional blood spotting and was definitely still tender. My CRS tried treating my incision with silver nitrate repeatedly for about 2 months (not fun). A month ago I went back in for surgery and the scar tissue in the wound was cleaned out and stitched up. However, I feel like I am back where I was before as it still drains a tiny bit (sometimes vaguely pink with blood), and is tender if my bowel movements are the tiniest bit off.

I'm sorry I haven't come back here to update this thread. I ended up not having the type of surgery that was planned. When my CRS went in she found no scar tissue problem but my muscle was bound up near the incision site. That's where all my pain was after LIS. So she cut off the weird skin tag that developed post LIS and massaged the muscle and injected some steroid into it. The recovery was easier than LIS except the tag removal is so painful.

Unfortunately, I still have the same burning pain when sitting so she sent me to a pain management specialist. I saw her this past Friday and she thinks my burning pain is nerve pain. My options were to give it time, a temporary nerve block or try neuropathy medicine. I've decided to try the medicine. One of the side effects is constipation. My husband is a pharmacist and looked up the side effects and constipation is one but not common. The most common is memory problems. We have company coming in for 2 weeks so I'll try the medicine after he leaves. I'll update how I'm doing.

Thanks for all the prayers and help!

You sound like your symptoms are very similar to mine.
I have started on gabapentin. It took a while to get used to it... And I had to do it very slowly.. 100 mg at a time week by week... But now I'm starting to notice a difference. It has definatley taken the edge off. It's still burns when I have to sit for more than a few minutes though.
I would start on a low dose as soon as you can... You will tolerate it better that way.

Hang on in there!

OMB I haven't tried the Gabapentin yet. I'm so worried I'll get constipated and that's how this whole business started. How are you feeling now? If you still have pain when sitting, I'm not sure it will help me. Sitting is my problem.

Hi so tired,

I have had no issues with constipation whatsoever.... But I do take movicol... So I wouldn't expect to have any problems whilst I'm on that.
I do get pain when sitting... But not like before. I can tolerate it much better.
I think as long as you take measures to keep stools soft, and start on a low dose, it's worth giving it a try.
