ETO believe it or not porridge oats make me reallly constipated! How strange is that?? I'm going for an oat bran cereal called Mornflake (have you heard of it?) I hope that will be ok?

Forgot to say that my comfortable BM's are a 6 on the Bristol Chart. When I had a bad day yesterday I had a 5 and that irritated the fissure. I hope I can find a diet that keeps them at a 6!

Fully on the rye bread case btw, it is on the shopping list!

I may well move over to Movicol as Lactulose doesn't work for me without the Senokot and I want to try and eliminate that.

Thanks for all your help my AFF buddies, I couldn't do it all without you! :thanx:

Hi guys,

In addition to above, have had a horrible day today so far.

I had a BM at 07.45 this morning (having not gone at all yesterday again) and it felt like I was having a 4 on the Bristol Scale, when I looked and felt it, it was actually a 5. I bled a bit and also was in pain having it (not broken glass pain, about 50% less than that) I didn't have any pull up pain (the pain you get when you have finished) but I was in pain afterwards again for hours. I took pain relief and had a sitz bath.

Bearing in mind I am on 30mls lactulose a day and a senokot and the last few days have been eating more soluble fibre I am quite upset. So my forward plan is to cut right back to a fruit and veg diet and see how that goes and then start introducing one food at a time i.e - rye bread, oat bran etc. I think this is the only way I can find out why my stools are harder than I want them to be.

I bought magnesium today too so I will start taking it tonight.

SS x

PS - I walked in to town today, very slowly and painfully to try on my dress and had possibly the most miserable old bat serving me that I have ever met. I ended up saying to her "Have I offended you in some way?" as she was SO rude! and she said "No, just had the tills go down etc bla bla bla". I thought, if I had a magic wand I would transfer my AF to you and THEN you would have something to be miserable about! :fairy:

Day 9

18.15 - A pain free BM, no pull up pain and not painful afterwards! Just a tiny bit sore, itchy, uncomfortable and throbbing but that was it. It was a 4/5 on the BS. Best day so far! The past 2 days I have only eaten fruit and veg, had 30mls of lactulose and a magnesium tablet. I think I can finally kick that additional nasty senokot tablet to the kerb.

Day 10

09.00 - Pain going to the toilet again, about 30% pain, pain afterwards but only for 10 mins. It was a 4 on the BS initially and then became a 5 which wasn't painful. I really don't know why they start off harder or what I can do about it and I really don't know how I can have such a good day and then go backwards!!!

Sound like you are making progress SS!

Remember it's a rollar coaster, but there will be more good days and less bad.

Ahh, yes the "plug effect". I used to have that too once in a while, but since I got my diet under control and started lactulose, I have been having pure bristol 5-6 BMs. For me potatoes, cheese, red meat and too little water will cause plugs. You just have to continue working on your diet and supplements, and you will get there too. Maybe try a food diary?

Thanks JHH, I'm pleased to hear you think I am making progress, I'm going to go and read some success stories in a minute, ones related to botox. I had a copy of a letter that went to my Dr today and it said I have a long & deep posterior chronic anal fissure. He also said that the fissure was almost up to the denate line, not too sure what that means but going to look it up.

Ahh the 'plug effect' ok, will have a search on the forum.

I am keeping a food diary which is really helping. I started on fruit and veg and have introduced rye bread today, I plan on introducing one new item per day so I can 'reallly' start to see what is good and bad for my BM's. Unfortunately I really found rye bread awful and I'm not fussy with food, I tried it all different ways but it ended up making me gag! Oh dear lol. I bought some spelt bread today as have read that has lots of soluble fibre in it. I've also bought oat cakes... I need some carbohydrates! :-)

Thanks again
SS

Hi sugarspice

Thought I'd come in to track your progress. I see your not doing
too bad at the moment. Looks like your struggling with "plugs" and
you are trying a type of elimination diet.

You have to be careful with this type of dieting as I hear you say
your introducing one new food per day and tracking changes. Introducing
new food per day is a bit too soon to track the change.

The ideal is that if you think a food is giving you problem you should
eliminate that one only. Then you should wait for at least a week or two
to track bm change. Then reintroduce that food after the two weeks.

If you did not notice any change in your bm in the 2-4 week of eliminating
and reintroducing that food than its likely not the offender so you
can concentrate on another food.

That's how I found out I can't handle too much floury foods like
bread, although I love it.

Remember eliminating one at a time is best so your not depriving yourself of
valuable nutrients. And it always good to consult with your DR. or dietitian for
better advice.

For me the floury foods like bread, crackers, muffins were way to binding.
All too often I would eat these alone with a stomach full of insoluble hoping
things would "come out alright. Intriguing to note, cereal food like All-bran I
really do not have problem with perhaps because I douse it with plenty of
insoluble cancelling foods like milk.

A neat trick that seems to help stop the plug is to eat your soluble first,
the idea being that the soluble food will enter the intestines first and thereby
alleviating the "plug".

So with me, nowadays when I do eat bread etc, I make sure after I have taken in
something like milk, which acts as a great laxative for me.

Good luck to you, you'll get there sugarspice.....

That's great advice that Buttastic, especially the 'plug' advice I hadn't even thought of that! As and when I have insoluble with soluble I will be sure to eat the soluble first.

Many thanks

Buttastic gave some great info. Definitely introduce diet changes slowly. I always gave each change 3-4 days to show their effect, and this is the absolute minimum IMHO.
