Alyssa,

I saw my pain specialist today and my MRI is perfectly normal. So there is no explanation for my pain other than from all my surgeries? Or the fact my butt has been in pain so long that my pelvic floor muscles have stayed contracted, nerve pathways keep firing?

He said the Botox is only a temporary fix so is not keen on doing it. He said when it wears off I would just need to get it done over and over again.

He said the best fix for me would be a Cluneal or sacral nerve stimulator from Boston Scientific. The boston scientific reps from the United States come over and he implants them while they tune the program for the pain.

I am not going to make a decision on this till January next year. In the meantime I am going to continue the dilation and pelvic floor physiotherapy daily.

Like everyone I really hope it would just go away though, seeing I am completely healthy otherwise.

My muscles are relaxed but I continue to have the burning pain while sitting? Wtf could be causing this? Nerve pathways? But how can that be resolved? I am at the end of my rope; breaking down and losing my mind!

What does this entail? How do you stay positive despite suffering for a long period of time?

Alyssa,

I have already been through a lot with this as well, relationship breakdown etc. I have certainly had to develop a mental toughness to keep soldiering on. What you must remember is that you aren't alone going through this and even though things seem bad at times.....it could still be much worse!

At the pain clinic I saw a young guy at 19 with 2 already back operations. Dosed up on morphine and still in a lot of pain. I thought I was at least lucky to not be him!

I have days where I am angry because I have done most things right, kept really fit, ate well etc....and then end up with something that could have been avoided if I had of known the surgery risks? Something so simple could be so lifechanging....don't you worry i know what the feeling is like.

Because it's been over 2 years though I have learnt to cope and I continue to fight this every day!! I still exercise every day and my pain medication allows me to function to a certain degree.

My advice would be to get the pain under control as best you can. If you can keep the pain under control you can at least get on with things somewhat while you keep searching!

I will never let this defeat me though.....ever!! Regarding these nerve pathways firing, I like to think if they can change to give us pain....there is no reason they can't change back??

Alyssa,

In regards to the Cluneal nerve stim. They run a small wire into the nerves in the spine that innervate the rectum. They then stimulate the nerves with a current with various frequencies. This confuses the pain signals getting back to the brain I think.

It's an invasive procedure and I am really only going to go through with it, if the pain medication and physio can't manage things good enough for me. Although the advantage of the nerve stim is that you can get off the pain drugs.

My pain specialist reckons he can take the pain down to a 0-2/10 with a stim.

Also I am getting my pain medication changed to a newer version of tramadol that doesn't interfere with other medications. Hopefully this will give me more relief and less dependence on having to use the oxycodone.

My pain management dr believes this new drug is good for pelvic pain. It's called tapentadol.

Just finished mowing the lawn here today and so far pain levels are pretty good. I'll see how this new drug goes over the next few weeks.

Alyssa,

That's interesting about the learned nerve pathways. I guess what that means if you have an anal fissure, get it treated quickly rather than prolonging the pain?

I am not sure about the constipation with this drug. I will just keep up the stool softeners and see how it goes.

My pharmacist said to me today that a lot of chronic pain patients were being switched to this new drug.
