Day 17:

Well, the abscess bust even more yesterday, sending a load of pussy yucky junky stuff out which stung like hell after a bowel motion. I've got the oregano oil, but I'm not too sure about the best way to use it as it shouldn't be applied topically to broken skin. I think it's okay dispersed in a bath or sitz bath, just not directly on the abscess site. I've also been feeling a bit shaky due to my iron levels, so probably need to up my iron intake. Hell will freeze over before I resort to the iron tablets! I took three and the effects were very unpleasant, so I'm ignoring my doctor's advice on this. Probably risky, but there we are.

Right now, I'm feeling a bit depressed if I'm honest, knowing it could have been very different. I was hoping the abscess might have drained once and for all, but it's still playing up, but maybe not to the extent it was. Hard to say really. I will probably try the oil today, but will be sparing with it.

Becka, doctor's specialise in cryptic responses lol! I've often come out of the doctor's office wondering exactly what to do. I would say if it's really small, keep it super clean and maybe put a small dab of topical antispectic on it such as Savlon. I'm also considering that universal panacea, TCP liquid - it seem to work for so many things. Not sure I'd use it neat, but a bit diluted. It just occurred to me.

I am just about managing to sit on my inflatable doughnut at my computer for a few minutes, which is a slight improvement from a few days ago, which is something I guess.

I'm getting to that May Fair, by hook or by crook!

I think the collective response to the LIS, fissures, hems etc. should be AAAARGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH! People who haven't gone through it, wouldn't have a clue. Saying that, I guess these things are hardly life threatening and others are in a fair worse boat then us. But I do think it's human nature to focus on our own problems.

So it's a toss up between diluted TCP and oregano oil. TCP is generally very good for infection, but it does pong, to put it mildly. The Police song, 'Don't Stand Too close To Me' springs to mind lol!

Oh no banjo but at least it out now I guess.
You can put it in the bath I do that at least once a week. Then I guess you can put the TCP straight on it...if you dilute the oregano oil with 1 part oregano to 20 parts olive oil you can put it directly on there as I did that on my fissure after the LIS to try and stop any infection as I'm super paranoid about germs
You will get there today banjo and it will make you feel better just by being able to be there and watch your daughter.
You are so right I'm part of a crohns/colostomy group and so many people on there have had cancer and lots of terrible things. We are fundamentally just struggling with a cut nothing life threatening at all. But can I say that the ones who have also had fissures say that they are up there with the worst things they have had.
Super good luck for this afternoon fingers crossed it goes well

Just Day 18 (1:27am):

Just a quicky to say that I got there this afternoon to watch my 7-year-old do her maypole dance. It was a really lovely experience, seeing her and the other children celebrating a sort of rite-of-passage. Something my wife and I have looked forward to since she born - i.e. going to the local school and taking part in a pretty complicated maypole dance routine with long coloured ribbons, where they weave in and out of each other around the maypole. Very English and very traditional! I must admit I felt a bit teary (what a wimp eh! lol!). Incidentally, I videod the the dance - it'll be lovely to look back on in years to come.

MPB, thanks for the further info on the oil - very helpful :-) Yes, I think if we can, it does help to get things into perspective a little. It's not always easy, I know when your life becomes coloured by all of this. Another point is, recovery is not a race. Some of us will heal quickly, whilst others will have a more complex route to their goal. There should be a solution for 99% of us - I'm glad I chose the LIS route, despite my current problems.

I'll post again soon.

Day 20:

I saw one of the GPs at my local practice today and she insisted that I took the antibiotics for the abscess, so I've reluctantly started taking them.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think my worst fears are probably going to be realised that I've developed a fistula. Most of the time it's just pus that seeps out, but every so often it bursts again and what appears to faecal matter is present on the wet wipes and toilet paper. It's not seeping out of the anal/rectal area, but from the abscess site to the left of the anus. To be honest, I'm not sure where to go with this as I can't afford private treatment and even seeing my CRS will probably take several months and then there's several more months wait for a further corrective operation. That in itself presents a high risk factor in my opinion, as I bled so heavily following my LIS operation that I'd worry it easily happen again.

I hope the antibiotics might clear some of the pus out, so I could at least sit more comfortably. I do find after it bursts that I can sit a little without it bothering me too much.

As you can imagine, I'm feeling a bit down and wondering when or even if this can be resolved. I guess my fear is I've swapped a bad situation for a worse one. Any words of positivity would be much appreciated.

Oh banjo what crap luck but don't give in yet, I know antibiotics can bring their own issues but it may clear the infection up. If the worst happens and it is a fistula please google oregano flushes as my friend with crohns used this on hers and it totally cleared up, she used to get the nurse at her GP surgery to do it every day for her and in the end it was sorted before the date for her op. She also took calcium fluoride cell salts
I'm sure the antibiotics will sort this out for you you really do deserve a bit of luck now. Don't give up I can't even imagine how frustrated you must be but you will get through this and your life will go back to normal.

Thanks MPB - your practical advice, ideas and positivity really does help a lot :-)

I'm still feeling fairly breathless because of my low iron levels and know I need to step up my iron intake to start feeling stronger. So it's back to the chicken livers tomorrow (I had a day off today). I know iron tablets would solve it, but I just can't face the associated constipation and months of weird tar black motions and possible rectal damage. I'm going to up my Spatone to 2 a day or combine it with Floridix. At the moment I just feel overwhelmed at having to fight this thing on so many fronts.

Anyhow, however down I'm feeling I can't afford to give up because of my wife and daughter, but it's going to be a hard slog. It's just as well I work from home and my business semi looks after itself (indie publishing). Having to go to work would be a non-starter and I'd probably lose my job, so that's a bit of a plus. I am getting walks in now, which I hope will make me stronger, despite the low iron levels.

To be honest, I'm feeling pretty guilty here as I'm worried my negative posts will deter people from trying the LIS route. I probably should have stayed away from the forum, but rather selfishly felt the need for support at this time. Any would-be LISers, please don't be put off by me - I've just been unlucky - maybe I dropped a mirror on a black cat while walking under a ladder lol!

Banjo please don't feel guilty for posting when your having issues or feeling down. Look at some of my posts after LIS. I remember saying I was going to starve myself till they gave me a colostomy....but I healed and put that down too.
I think in some way it gives hope to others that of us with complications can heal then so can anyone. Also it helps others who are struggling to realise they are not alone as it can often feel like everyone else is recovering fine.
It's great your getting out on more walks. Iron so tough to get in the body without having a negative impact on the intestines. Have you tried ferrum phos cell salts...it's helps the body absorb iron even from small amounts....I use it when I'm bleeding a lot from my crohns as I don't like having to have blood.
Keep going banjo you will get there

Thanks MPB - lovely reply as always :-) The ferrum phos cell salts sound interesting, I'll check those out.

It's interesting to say the least, what is happening since I started taking the antibiotics on Monday night. On the plus side, I'm NOT constipated which is probably better than being bunged up. It's definitely gone very much the other way with a serious case of the explosive diarrhoea (like bullets from a gun!). After the 'explosion' I quickly clean myself up with wetwipes as well as I can to try to avoid the associated stinging on the abscess site and then fill a sitz bath with warm water that sits in the loo. At the moment I'm using table salt and a drop of TCP in the water to act as an antiseptic. I'm very tempted to try the oregano oil in it rather than the TCP, but I'm not sure how much I should put in, as it's meant to be pretty strong.

So far the abscess is still with me, but I'll reserve judgement until Monday when I finish my current course of antibiotics.

How are you doing MPB? Is it six months since your LIS? I'm hoping ultimately mine will be successful. Again on the plus side, when I didn't have the runs, it did feel a fair bit easier to go. On the negative side when I break wind (notice the elegant terminology lol!) it's not super comfortable unless I get into a specific position. I'm not sure if this is because of the abscess or an issue with the anal opening. To be blunt, it's a lot less uncomfy when I lie on my right side and lift my left buttock up in the air.

Thanks for your thoughts on the guilt issue, that does put it into perspective a lot better. In satnav terms, my route probably isn't quite as straightforward as from A to B, but hopefully I will reach my destination in the end!

Oh yes I hate antibiotics for that reason but I'm sure they will do the trick and get rid of the infection though.
I put about 5/7 drops of the neat oregano oil I to my baths and have done since the day after my LIS. I also put coconut oil in there too. I guess you could start with one drop.
I'm doing ok thanx normally pain free now apart from when I have multiple BMs having a bad day today so in a bit of pain but hey I don't mind that really as most days I gave a normal BM and no pain at all.
It's probably a combination of the abscess and the fact it's still swollen down there. I remember for the first month or so passing wind was quite difficult and I could only do it in certain positions lol.
You will definitely reach your destination of being pain free banjo even if it takes a bit longer than you expected you will get there

Re: LIS Operation on Thursday

Thanks MPB :-)

At least I'm over half way through the antibiotics now (11 out of 21). Let's just say it's NOT fun! Four bathroom visits yesterday. I do feel that as I've got this far I need to at least give this a proper go to see if the infection decides to leave or at least diminish.

I tried the oregano oil last night in my sitz bath without any real issues. Then this morning I put what I thought were 2 drops into the sitz bath again, sat in it and started splashing the water around and my hand began to sting. At which point I thought maybe the mix was a little too strong and immersed myself in a sitz bath of plain cool water to calm it down. Although it was a slightly alarming experience, it's also very interesting knowing that it's that potent, which in it's own was is quite encouraging. It's probably just a matter of getting the dose right without scalding myself lol!

I'm so glad it's largely worked out well for you regarding the LIS. I guess if you could figure out why you had the occasional bad days, it could be a bit more predictable and easier to control. Then again, if you get too regimented in a particular food and activity regime, it can lead to a very limited set of life choices, something I know only too well (i.e. scared of trying different combinations of foods etc.). My food choices at the moment have been semi-forced on me by my low iron issues and in that sense it's probably a good thing finding out that eating chicken livers or cottage pies aren't going to send me to A & E! I do hope to expand my menu significantly when I'm recovered and deviate from the previous chicken/white fish round-a-bout I became stuck on.
