Upcoming Fistula Surgery

Postby mizar » 28 Oct 2012, 06:44

I have scheduled surgery to have both my fistulas (and fizzures) repaired. I must say that I am more nervous about this pending surgery than any of my past four surgeries (inguinal hernia, left shoulder, left heel, gall bladder removal).
I live in Maine and had no faith in the only CRS clinic in the state (they only wanted to repair one of my two fistulas). I am scheduled to have my procedure at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fl. Does anyone have any experience with CRS's there?

Mizar - I would recommend looking up reviews about your surgeon online. I always do that - and usually it's a good indication of what to expect.

Okay, had surgery yesterday for what I think/thought was to repair fizzures and a fistulas. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see the surgeon afterwards. He did speak to my girlfriend and told her that I had five fistulas that had no muscle involvement? Is that really possible? I had them located at 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock just under my scrotum. I'm also don't know he he repaired the fizzures, which is what I thought caused the fistulas to begin with.
Now sitting in my hotel room waiting on my first BM, and the thought of it scares me to death. I don't have a hand held shower here, but was provided with a sitz bath. Will tha shower and sitz actually get the area clean enough?

They may all just be superficial fistulas - thus the no muscle involvement. I personally think anything's possible - never thought our "butts" could be so complicated! Definitely schedule a follow up with your surgeon. Do you have any packing that needs to be changed?
Regarding your bm - yes, the sitz bath should work. You can also ask your gf to go to a drug store or walmart/target and purchase a cheap showerhead. You can install it in the hotel bathroom (very easy to do) temporarily. If that doesn't work, the sitz bath will help clean the area - I always use epsom salts - find them soothing. You can also ask her to purchase some baby wipes - I've been using the all natural huggies brand. They help me thoroughly clean the area, especially if I'm not at home.

Drink lots of water! Are you on any pain meds? Any strong ones will be constipating. You can consider taking a laxative - I had to take senokot (2 pills).

I was provided codeine, but haven't taken any. Been taking laxatives and stool softener since the evening of my surgery.
