Hi Strangeworldaf:
I only took Ultram (Tramadol) and ibuprofen, neither of which cause constipation (in my experience). The Ultram helps with the pain and the ibuprofen helps with the inflammation. My CRS will not prescribe narcotics because the LAST thing you want is to be constipated. To be honest, the Ultram and ibuprofen were more than enough to handle my post-op pain (which was more discomfort than pain).
I also take a full dose of Miralax every morning to keep everything nice and soft.
One piece of advice that I would give you is to start eating soft foods right away after surgery so that you can get things moving in your system again ASAP. I ate a lot of oatmeal, jello, applesauce, pudding, crackers, etc. I also drank a lot of water.
Let me know if you have any other questions. Keep in mind that I am not a doctor, but I will give you the best advice I can based on my personal post-surgical experience.

Hi Strangeworldaf:
Have you already had surgery?
In terms of cleaning, here was my routine (based on the advice of my CRS):
I took at least three 20 to 30 minute hot baths a day.
After a BM, I did NOT wipe at all. I hopped in the shower and gently rinsed off with a hand-held shower head (without any soap). I then hopped in the bath and let everything soak for 20 to 30 minutes (again, I didn't use any soap). After the bath, I hopped back in the shower and this time I used a very mild soap (Cetaphil) to clean the area gently and thoroughly. After the shower, I used a hair dryer (on the cool setting) to dry everything off. This kept everything nice and clean.
In terms of narcotics, I am not a doctor, nurse or pharmacist, but this is my understanding based on what my CRS told me: one of the most consistent side effects of narcotic use is constipation (which is why many CRS's do not prescribe them following surgery - the last thing you want to do is strain to have a BM). To combat this, you might want to take Milk of Magnesia or Sennakot, following the directions on the bottle. Both are available over-the-counter. Of course, I would check with your doctor if you are experiencing any constipation before taking any medication. Keep in mind that it is normal for it to take several days to have a BM following surgery. If your first BM is anything like mine, it will be a breeze (the fear of the first BM is much worse than the actual BM, in my experience).
Here are a couple of good links regarding narcotics and constipation:

By the way, Miralax has been a lifesaver for me. I take a full dose every morning.
I hope this helps.

The only other thing I would recommend is that you drink plenty of water.

Not that I recall, but it wouldn't surprise me as the area can become a little swollen.
